While we understand why this may be desired, we do not generally offer same day consultations and procedures. We need to make sure we have full bloodwork on your pet as well as prescribe some pre-medications for the procedure so we can keep them as comfortable and safe as possible.
The consultation is $125. If your pet needs bloodwork and pre-medications for a COHAT procedure, we can give you an estimate for those costs as well.
A COHAT is a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. This is what we call our dentistry procedures here and it includes: a full physical exam, sedation, intravenous catheter and fluids, general anesthesia, anesthesia monitoring, full mouth dental xrays, full oral exam, dental scaling with an ultrasonic scaler, polishing of the teeth, oravet sealant, before and after pictures, recovery from anesthesia and day hospitalization. If you pet needs treatment beyond a cleaning, it includes a making a treatment plan and calling you while your pet is under anesthesia to discuss recommendations and get you a pet idea on additional cost.
When you come for your dentistry consultation, we will build a custom treatment plan for your pet based on their physical and oral exam. It is difficult to give an estimate without this vital information.
Every patient has to undergo anesthesia for a COHAT procedure here. We cannot properly diagnose or treat dental disease without it. Dental xrays are imperative to understand your pet’s oral health and cannot be done on an awake patient. We also cannot clean your pet’s teeth thoroughly with them awake.
On the day of your pet’s COHAT, you will meet briefly with a technician in the morning and they will check in your pet. We check in all our patients in the morning and prepare them for surgery. We do a few COHAT procedures in a day so your pet may not have their COHAT for a few hours after check in. As soon as we have your pet’s dental xrays and oral exam complete, the doctor will call you to discuss the treatment plan. We will then send a picture of your pet in recovery when they are awake and give you a time to pick up. Pick up time is usually about an hour after they have recovered.
Most COHATs are between 1 to 3 hours.
If you pet had oral surgery, they likely will need to eat soft food only for 2 weeks and not have any access to toys for that time. Some patients may need to wear an ecollar after surgery as well. Your pet will have pain medication to keep the comfortable and most patients are back to their normal self by the next day.
We work with all pet insurance companies and will send records and paid invoices to them for you to be reimbursed by your carrier.
While we do not offer payment plans through the clinic, we do accept CareCredit and Scratch Pay. These companies offer payment plans for your pet’s healthcare needs.
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, CareCredit, Scratch Pay, and Cash (we do not have change).
Most dogs start with 42 adult teeth and cats have 30. If we have to extract a few of these teeth, they will still have many teeth to chew with. If we have to extract all or most of their teeth, thankfully, they will still do great! Pet’s do not have the aesthetic concerns that we do about having teeth and we can feed them whatever they need to thrive. This may mean soft food, but many of these pet’s still eat kibble because it is small enough to swallow.
Cat and dog teeth are different that ours and already have natural spacing between them. Their teeth do not shift after a neighboring tooth is extracted.
To schedule a COHAT procedure, we require a $250 deposit. This deposit is refundable or reusable if you give us 1 week notice to cancel or reschedule. On the day of the procedure, we require a deposit of the low end of the treatment plan.
We do have a small waiting area if you would like to wait for your pet’s procedure. After our morning consultations are done, we also have exam rooms you can wait in. We can give you a better idea on timing of your pet’s COHAT on the morning of the procedure. There are lots of great shops and restaurants in Portland just 20 minutes away as well. We would be happy to give you our recommendations!
Included in our COHAT is to make sure that you have a plan to keep your pet’s teeth healthy from here forward. We will make homecare recommendations custom to you and your pet’s needs. Additionally, we recommend that your pet have a COHAT at least annually to keep those teeth healthy. For pet’s that need oral surgery due to dental disease, we recommend they come back in 6 months for a COHAT.
You do not need a referral. We will request records from your veterinarian to make sure we understand you pet’s full health and to make sure they are up to date on vaccines, specifically a rabies vaccine.
Rabies is a severe, life-threatening disease and is transmitted through the salivary system. We are going to be working in your pet’s mouth and we need to keep everyone safe.
