DVM, MPH, DACVPM
Dedicated to veterinary oral health and preventive care.
Dr. Jennifer Keaten grew up in Fryeburg, Maine and graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 2000. She studied biology at Saint Michael’s College in Burlington, VT and initially pursued a career in wildlife and environmental ecology. In 2006, Dr. Keaten was introduced to the world of veterinary medicine when she took a job at Fryeburg Veterinary Hospital. She was trained to be a veterinary technician and quickly fell in the love with the field. It was in these early stages that she developed her passion for veterinary dentistry and preventive medicine and was fortunate to work at a veterinary hospital that practiced progressive medicine and had digital dental x-rays earlier than most hospitals.
In 2008, Dr. Keaten decided to apply to veterinary school and was accepted to and attended Iowa State University in 2009-2013 to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). Due to her passion for preventive medicine, she also completed all but a practicum project for a master’s in public health (MPH). She completed this project in 2016 with the University of Maine to earn her MPH.
After graduating from Iowa State University, Doctor Keaten began to pursue her passion for veterinary dentistry with extensive training, continuing education, and study. In 2021, Dr. Keaten also passed a board exam to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (DACVPM).
In 2021, seeing a large need in the area, Dr Keaten decided to limit her practice to veterinary dentistry and started Mainely Veterinary Dentistry (MVD). MVD began as a traveling dental service and has now become the first dentistry only practice for cats and dogs in Maine and is located in Windham, Maine.
Dr. Keaten loves that dentistry combines her love of surgery and preventive medicine for her patients. The benefit for her patients is that she is solely focused on this aspect of a very important part of their health and can offer the best care and service for them and their owners.
Dr. Keaten is so passionate about veterinary dentistry and the impact it can have on a patient’s quality of life and the human-animal bond, that she also provides dental training courses for both veterinarians and veterinary technicians in the New England area. She hopes that by teaching more veterinarians and their staff to provide high quality dental care that she will be able to reach more patients and improve their lives.
Outside of veterinary dentistry and preventive medicine, Dr. Keaten loves hiking and trail running with her Cane Corso, Brutus, aka @Bubbiesthebluemountainmastiff. She also enjoys spending time on her farm in Bridgton, Maine with her 2 horses (Percheron and Thoroughbred) and 15 chickens.
Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
Kandis has been in the veterinary field for 6 years, and licensed for over 4 years as a technician. Her passion for veterinary dentistry started early in her career in Las Vegas and continued to develop in Maine.
This passion made joining MVD one of the easiest decisions she has ever made! Kandis enjoys practicing gold standard medicine and enjoys working at a practice that is committed to the same.
Originally from Las Vegas, NV, Kandis and her family moved to Maine in 2021 when her husband retired from the US Air Force. They love all that Maine has to offer including motorcycle and ATV riding, hiking, the beautiful scenery, the people, and especially kayak fishing! Kandis loves spending time with her husband, daughter and 2 small dogs (Charlee and Bruizer) when she isn’t at work.
Technician Assistant
Maureen is a Texas gal, recently turned Mainer. She has 5 years of experience in veterinary medicine while working under a boarded veterinary dentist in Texas. Maureen graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science in the Fall of 2020 from Texas A&M University in Commerce, Texas.
While visiting her parents this summer in Windham, Maine, Maureen came across the opportunity to continue her work in the veterinary dentistry field and see what Maine had to offer. She moved to Maine in November 2022 with four-legged best friend Harley. Harley and Maureen enjoy road trips, spending time at the lake, and making friends along the way. Harley has been her partner in crime for 6 years, and she feels lucky to have a pal like her.
Maureen enjoys working in veterinary dentistry, mostly due to the life changing effect that good oral health can have on an animal’s quality of life. My favorite post-COHAT update from an owner is: Wow they’re acting like a baby/playing with toys again! -it warms my heart knowing that I was able to make a difference in their day-to-day life.
Technician Assistant
Pauline is a native Maine-ah, outdoor enthusiast, and without doubt – animal lover.
After working an office job for close to a decade, albeit for a veterinary diagnostics company, a change was needed. Pauline then began her veterinary technology career in general practice, where she discovered her passion for veterinary dentistry.
She shares her home with a couple of cool cats, two dogs, rabbits, chickens, geese, ducks and even a python and two cockatiels thrown into the mix. Oh… and her husband, as well as a wonderful little boy who is following in his mama’s footsteps with animal husbandry. In her off time Pauline enjoys hiking, boating, fishing – really anything that gets her outdoors, no matter what the weather.
Client Service Representative
Shannon lived in Biddeford/Saco for 30 years, before recently moving to central Maine. Shannon worked for the past 3 years at Maine Veterinary Medical Center Rehabilitation and Acupuncture Department as an assistant. She transferred to our practice in March to further her knowledge in a different specialty, growing her veterinary career in a small practice unlike any other in Maine!
Prior to working in veterinary medicine, Shannon worked in federal service for a little over 8 years. This ended when she needed an invasive reconstructive knee surgery (her 5th of 6!) and had to learn to walk again. After extensive physical therapy, she decided to rejoin the workforce in a field she had always been passionate about- veterinary medicine.
Shannon has a soft spot for animals needing extra assistance- such as tripods and those with physical abnormalities. She has 3 cats, brothers Buddy and Honeybug (whom her daughter named at the age of 4) and recently adopted Kobe who had a rough start in life. Shannon enjoys being outside in any weather, especially at her daughter’s year round sporting events and taking advantage of fishing/camping, nights by the fire, and exploring new places with wildlife.
Veterinary Assistant
Bailey is a former student of Saint Joe’s College of Maine where she is studying to peruse a career in fitness and nutrition, in hopes of one day opening her very own fitness facility. In the mean time she is doing something that she loves the most, helping animals.
Bailey was raised in a family of four dogs, and now that she is grown up and out of the house she is expecting a fur baby of her very own, “Whiskey,” a purebred German Shepherd. Bailey is very fond of the outdoors and would describe herself as a “little bit of everything” gal. She loves the outdoors, hunting, hiking, mudding but also loves dressing up nice, going out, shopping and enjoying all the things that life has to offer.
Bailey enjoys the field of dentistry because she can notice first hand how life changing it can be. The first week Bailey was with us, she experienced a dog who had a “cups” case, where a small dog had to have all of its teeth removed due to infection. She loved being able to witness how completely the dogs whole personality had changed within just a short 24 hours.
Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
Kathy’s compassion for animals began at a young age while volunteering at a local animal shelter. Her career started after graduating from college and obtaining her veterinary technician license in NY in 2003. Since then she has been living and working as a LVT in northern VA until she moved to Maine this summer with her family.
Kathy has been in general medicine hospitals for the majority of her career but has always had a special interest in dentistry. She is excited to be a part of this cutting edge team that practices high level veterinary medicine. She is eager to continue to learn and expand her knowledge base of canine and feline dentistry.
During her free time, Kathy enjoys spending time with her husband and two kids as well their furry family member Brady the golden. They all especially love exploring the outdoors and are excited to experience all that beautiful Maine has to offer.

After moving to Florida, she obtained her bachelors in environmental science and animal biology while working as a veterinary technician in a shelter.
She then joined the military as a veterinary technician for the military working dogs. She was in charge of 30+ military working dogs and earned herself plenty of awards, including a humanitarian award for assisting with COVID efforts.
