Classification: Full time, Hourly
I. Summary: Mainely Veterinary Dentistry’s success depends upon an equitable measure
of clinical and non-clinical skills to ensure that the professional veterinary services sought by the
Practice’s clients are delivered profitably by the Practice at a price that offers clients value for
their money. This position is a hybrid of head technician and veterinary technician
duties.

• Ability to take Dental x-rays
• Credentialed candidates (LVT, CVT or RVT) are strongly desired for this role
• Unlicensed technicians with many years of experience and/or management experience may be considered
III. Supervisor Responsibilities: Under general direction and supervision of
the Practice Manager, the Head Tech will be responsible for administering and
overseeing several of the non-clinical skills/activities associated with but not limited to inventory,
personnel, client relations, equipment and facility management including security and safety. The Head Technician will work closely with the Practice manager to ensure all supervisor responsibilities are performed in accordance with Practice policies, protocols and procedures.
Some of the Head Tech duties include:
Oversee/manage inventory and ordering supplies
o Doing inventory and ordering to ensure it is done accurately and timely
o Control inventory costs and ensure that inventory is kept to a minimum without
running out
Maintain employee schedule
o Observe employee workflows and give management feedback about SOPs and protocols to ensure efficient operations
o Maintain employee checklists and upload accountabilities for completed tasks
o Ensure lunch breaks are taken at a reasonable time
o Help maintain flow of dental cases being started in a timely manner
Oversee OSHA compliance
o Assist with the development of the OSHA manual and ensure it stays up to date
o Meet quarterly with OSHA tech to ensure tasks are completed
Attend occasional weekend events to promote Mainely Veterinary Dentistry
o 4-5 events per year
o Table/booth with brochures and giveaways
o Ensure that all supplies are ordered and ready
Serve as the point person for staff questions and routine problems
o Employees will be instructed to come to the head tech for any problems
(staff and client problems) they cannot handle on their own
o Discuss issues with practice manager to develop solutions
o Execute solutions
IV. The Veterinary Technician Responsibilities: Veterinary Technician is under the direct supervision of the supervising veterinarian. To perform this job requires specific knowledge of animal health and small animal dentistry, anesthesia, the ability to assist the doctor as needed, perform procedures and tasks independently and correctly, and to communicate with clients (as well as coworkers) in a friendly, professional, and courteous manner. The technician’s main responsibilities include patient care as well as client education and customer service.
Exam Room: The Veterinary Technician is responsible for the exam rooms, which include
stocking any replacing missing items from the rooms. They are responsible for disinfecting the
rooms in between patients and properly handling all hazardous materials, using proper PPE.
Reception: The Veterinary Technician is responsible for entering all medical invoices for the
doctors.
Pharmacy: The Veterinary Technician is responsible for preparing any medications that the
doctor requests for the patient. This includes documenting the prescription in the patient’s
medical file, preparing the medication to be dispensed to the client with proper labeling, and
having a second person check the proper dose, and medication is filled for the right patient.
Communicating the directions of the medication to the client when necessary and dispensing the patient drug information sheet.
Patient/Client Responsibility: The Veterinary Technician is responsible for assisting the
veterinarians as directed with diagnostic procedures and the medical, surgical and therapeutic
treatment of patients, including but not limited to the following:
1. Assist Veterinarians with physical examinations and client education.
2. Collect histories and write medical records for consultations and dentistry procedures.
3. Make treatment plans and thoroughly explain the plan with the client. Ensure treatment
plans are signed.
4. Delegate tasks to other technicians or technician assistants to ensure appointments run as
efficiently as possible and on time.
5. Prepare and review discharge instructions with clients; maintain updated discharge
instructions for all procedures.
6. Review patient histories prior to appointments and ensure all records are received.
7. Administer medications, treatments, vaccines and blood products to patients as prescribed
by the veterinarians.
8. Perform all diagnostic tests requested by the veterinarians.
9. Take and record temperatures, pulse, respiration, weight and history, including a body
condition score (BCS).
10. Perform phlebotomy from jugular, cephalic or saphenous vein for cats and dogs.
11. Collect and label specimens for culture or microscopic examination, including mailing
out histopathology.
12. Dress wounds and apply bandages, and other protective devices upon doctor’s orders.
13. Perform professional dental cleanings and polishing with both an ultrasonic scaler and
hand scalers/curettes.
14. Perform dental nerve blocks (licensed technician only).
15. Perform dental probing and charting.
16. Perform IV catheterization.
17. Take high quality full mouth dental radiographs on each patient in a timely manner.
18. Assist veterinarian.
19. Maintain thorough medical records and hospital logs.
20. Perform daily rounds with doctors.
21. Know emergency procedures, triage patients and notify doctor in a timely manner.
22. Observe the condition and behavior of hospitalized patients and provide treatments as needed.
23. Perform and/or assist veterinarians with humane euthanasia.
24. Oversee the in-house laboratory, including quality of tests, inventory and training as
needed and/or delegated.
25. Comply with DEA and OSHA regulations.
26. Log controlled substances accurately and precisely and maintains controlled substance
log. Notifies management when there is a discrepancy that cannot be corrected in the log.
27. Support, respect and collaborate with the veterinarians, management and co-workers.
28. Assist veterinarian in surgery by providing correct equipment and instruments and by
assuring that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac
monitors and breathing apparatus are in excellent working condition as needed and/or
delegated.
29. Support your co-workers and the doctors in their dentistry and ill patient callbacks for
quality of care and ensure follow-up care with appropriate rechecks and reminders.
30. Ensure that cleaning protocols for equipment, treatment area, surgical suites, patient
wards, and grounds are maintained.
31. Restock all items on a routine basis. Rotate stock to prevent expired medication and
supplies. Place needed items on the inventory order before they run out.
32. Maintain patient histories for procedures, laboratory diagnostics, and hospitalizations.
33. Induce, maintain, and monitor patients under anesthesia under the direction of a
veterinarian.
34. Recover patients from anesthesia and ensure they are awake, aware, warm, comfortable,
and stable.
35. Keep a clean, organized and safe work environment.
36. Clean cages and kennels.
37. Walk dogs when needed.
Customer Service: There may be times when the Veterinary Technician works at the front desk
where he/she will answer phones, schedule appointments, greet customers, prepare invoices and discharge patients and follow up with clients by making phone calls. Technicians should answer the phone when it rings in the dental suite when they are available and it will not affect the flow of the dental procedure schedule.
