Endodontics: Root Canal Therapy

If a pet’s tooth has suffered damage without compromising the pulp cavity and remains stable on dental x-ray, our specialized root canal therapy can effectively preserve the tooth’s integrity and prevent the need for extraction.

At Mainely Veterinary Dentistry, we are proud to offer advanced root canal therapy as part of our comprehensive dental services for pets. Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is a specialized dental procedure designed to save a pet’s diseased or damaged tooth by removing the compromised pulp material from the center of the tooth and replacing it will fill. The center of the tooth is often referred to as the pulp cavity or the root canal and has a blood vessel and a nerve within it. When this cavity is exposed, bacteria will travel down the canal and cause infection at the root tip (abscess) and even within the blood stream. Fractured teeth are extremely painful when the first occur and then are a source of chronic infection and pain long term. Additionally, discolored or dead teeth have lost their blood supply to the tooth and the center of the tooth will be necrotic can also lead to infection and pain. These teeth either need to be extracted or have a root canal.

Unlike extraction, which involves removing the entire tooth, root canal therapy preserves the natural tooth structure. This means that pets can maintain function which can enhance the overall quality of life for our patients. Additionally, root canal therapy is less invasive than extraction of a tooth.

Root canal therapy is particularly beneficial for pets suffering from non-vital (dead or discolored teeth), tooth fractures, or traumatic dental injuries. By addressing the underlying dental issues and eliminating infection, we can alleviate pain and discomfort, improve oral health, and prevent further complications.
